Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)

Toilet Review: If James Bond was half as likable as Eggsy, I’d be all over his movies.

This is one of the rare breed of movies that I find that I can just sit, relax and enjoy. There isn’t an agenda, there isn’t an “experience” that I have to have, it’s just a good movie that I can enjoy whilst eating biscuits and having a cup of tea.

We meet Eggsy, a working class guy trying to find his way in the world after his dad dies. He manages to get into trouble one night after stealing a car, and on a whim, calls a number that his mum told him would get him out of trouble. We meet the mysterious Galahad, a man trying to make up for a wrong decades old, who wants desperately to prove to Eggsy that he can make it as an enigmatic “Kingsman”.

The movie follows a fairly prescriptive plot with nothing that was truly original or perplexing. It does teeter on the edge of being your bog standard Hollywood spy movie, with much, much darker elements.  Just little nods that hint of a much deeper movie that could just rock your socks off if it was made. Alas, this is not this movie. “Kingsman” is something that doesn’t really do anything special, but still manages to be a goddamn great movie.

I rather liked Taron Egerton as Eggsy. I’d like to see more of him. He does a fantastic job in this, and makes the entire movie just seem effortless. Whether it’s doing doughnuts in a car outside a put, or killing terrorists with aerial acrobatics, this guy just looks phenomenal. It would seem this is his first big movie so hopefully we will see more of him as time comes. Also, it was lovely to see Colin Firth in something other than a soppy romance or a hard hitting drama. He just owns Galahad, and he works really well with Eggsy.

I honestly can’t say enough good things about this movie, and I’m shocked at myself for taking this long to watch it!

  1. I agree with you! This movie was fantastic and that’s coming from someone really doesn’t care for spy movies! I was really surprised how much I enjoyed this one. Loved the character Galahad, I feel like I have to marry someone just like him now! Colin Firth was perfection in this!
